A New Era in Workplace Design with Launch of MIWD

The unveiling of the Malaysian Institute of Workplace Design (MIWD) at ARCHIDEX 2025 marks a strategic and long-overdue shift in how Malaysia approaches the design of work environments. As workspaces evolve beyond mere physical locations into dynamic ecosystems that reflect culture, wellbeing, and performance, the establishment of a central authority like the MIWD is both timely and essential.

Led by John Jung of Thinkscape, the MIWD responds to a longstanding industry gap: the absence of structured, context-driven guidelines for workplace design in Malaysia and much of Asia. While global models exist, none are tailored to the unique social, economic, and cultural realities of the Malaysian workforce. The MIWD aims to fill this vacuum, bringing together professionals from architecture, interior design, corporate real estate, HR, and more to define best practices and drive a new standard.

The launch coincides with the World of Works (WOW) showcase at ARCHIDEX, an immersive experience that demonstrates the real-world application of integrated, human-centred workplace design. These learnings will feed directly into the MIWD’s framework development, ensuring practical relevance and cross-sector buy-in.

More than a think tank, the MIWD is a unifying platform to align fragmented approaches and promote future-proof strategies for hybrid work, employee well-being, productivity, and ESG compliance. Its work over the next two years will lay the foundation for policy formulation, design benchmarks, and ultimately, healthier, high-performing work environments.

As Jung puts it: “It’s a bold move—but a necessary one. The industry needs it. Malaysia needs it.” The MIWD is set to drive long-term transformation, aligning workplace design with national development goals and business needs in a fast-changing world.
