Tanjak in Motion, Showcasing the Flexibility of Timber

Step into Tanjak in Motion, Malaysian Timber Council’s bold architectural statement that pays homage to heritage while pushing the frontiers of timber innovation. Inspired by the regal folds of the traditional tanjak headgear, this sculptural pavilion fuses cultural pride with futuristic design through two sweeping timber arches symbolising motion, strength, and national identity.

Designed by Ar. IDr. Esmonde Yap Shiwen, the structure is a masterclass in sustainable construction. Crafted from Malaysian species like Chengal and Kembang Semangkok (KSK), each triangulated module is bent, joined with dowels, no nails, no screws and completely demountable. This isn’t just architecture, it’s circular design in motion.

Far from static, Tanjak in Motion is alive—light, shadow, and movement transform the space as you walk through. More than a showpiece, it’s a travelling pavilion with global ambition, ready to be reassembled anywhere in the world as ceiling panels, lighting features, or sculptural art.

MTC’s showcase is not just about timber, it’s about vision. It’s about positioning Malaysia as a global design force where sustainability, culture, and cutting-edge design collide.
